Not Attending a Wedding? Etiquettes on How to RSVP No to Singapore Banquets

It's always wedding season! You're honoured to have been invited to be a part of your family/friend's wedding. But sometimes, life happens. You might find yourself in a situation where you have to decline a wedding invite.

Do NOT simply RSVP no without following up. Coming from a graduated bride & groom, we want to share these tips with you.

Respond Promptly

Respect the couple's planning process by responding promptly, ideally within the timeframe mentioned on the invitation. Even better if you can reply ASAP, way before the RSVP deadline if you already know that you will not attend.

How you break the news MATTERS

Don't just RSVP "no" on the wedding website or invite. Be sure to FOLLOW UP in-person, or with a phone call / text message.

Here's what to say to them:

  • Thank them for the invitation. Phrases like "Thank you so much for inviting me to celebrate your wedding..." or "I was truly honored to receive your wedding invitation..." set a positive tone.
  • Then, politely decline using words like "Unfortunately," "Regretfully," or "Sadly, I won't be able to attend..."
  • Offer an explanation, especially if it's a close friend or family. You can mention a prior commitment, travel constraints, or unforeseen circumstances.
  • End on a high note. Phrases like "Wishing you both all the love and joy on your special day!" or "I'm so happy for you and can't wait to celebrate with you in spirit!" showcase your genuine well wishes.

Sample message:

"I'm so honored to be invited to celebrate your wedding! Unfortunately, my travel overlaps with the date. I’m so sorry that I can’t make it, but I'm so happy for you both and wish you all the best for a lifetime of happiness together. Perhaps we can celebrate together soon after the wedding?"

BONUS TIPS

  • Consider a Gift: Even if you can't attend, sending a wedding gift is a thoughtful gesture.
  • Another option is to treat them to a celebratory meal to make up for your absence at their wedding.
  • Follow Up After the Wedding: For close couples, reach out after the wedding to express congratulations again and hear about their special day.
